The feelings surrounding COVID-19 have been almost as problematic as the virus itself. “We normally have our stressors and COVID is an added stressor. It has highlighted some of the differences in how we think about things. The choices that we make for our healthcare,” said Lee Health clinical psychologist Dr. Jacqueline Hidalgo.

She says the differences have likely been there before—but have now become a heated topic. “Why do we feel like everyone is angry? It’s because everyone, in some capacity, has been impacted by COVID-19. I believe it does have to do with the repression of emotions and the perception that people feel that their rights have been inflicted on and they are trying to tell them what to do,” she said.

But she says the anger many people are expressing is actually a secondary emotion to other feelings. “When we get angry, we regress to childlike behaviors. For example, we tend to act out. A lot of times when we get angry we tend to express it in inappropriate ways,” said Dr. Hidalgo.

Which is why she recommends choosing your battles, agreeing to disagree, and don’t engage if others choose to act out.
